Press release from Open Britain and Berkshire for Europe – Reading Festival Campaign

Members of Open Britain and Berkshire for Europe will be out in force this weekend, campaigning on the streets of Reading.

The aim is to engage with young festival-goers on the topic of Brexit and to promote a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal (#PeoplesVote ; @peoplesvote_uk). Volunteers will be distributing thousands of stickers and gaining signatures for the People’s Vote petition.

The action began on Thursday. Groups of campaigners interacted with festival goers at the station, along Caversham Road, and on the riverside. ‘A lot of the people we spoke to were too young to vote in 2016 and feel completely disenfranchised – they’re really worried about how Brexit will affect their futures. When we explained that we were campaigning for a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal, they were totally behind it’, said Berkshire for Europe member, Cathy Rogers.

Caroline Kuipers, spokesperson for Open Britain Reading and Berkshire, said:

Young people voted overwhelmingly to remain in the EU in 2016 and they will be most affected by the implications of Brexit. It is essential those in our communities that are going to have to “live” with the decision and are most likely to be seriously impacted by leaving the EU have their opportunity to have a say on their futures.

We need to be asking ourselves “What legacy are we leaving for our children, grandchildren and wider communities?” Help us commit to have a People’s Vote on the Final Deal.
